Regional Satraps in Political Parties

UPDATED:2021-10-12

Many parties suffer the problem of inefficient but loyal senior party workers continuing to throw their weight around. These regional satraps build their own teams, place their loyal people in various party positions, nominated posts, public offices, government departments, wield huge control over caste organizations, media and youth. India shunned monarchy but monarchy exists everywhere in India from corporator level up to Prime Minister Level.

All politicians want their children to inherit their political legacy. It does not matter to them whether the scions have talent or not. They deliberately do not allow second rung leadership to develop. They suppress talent shown by promising leaders by allocating them non visible work and tiring them out till they shift to other parties or quit politics. For decades, they continue their hoid thus on the party so much that the party leadership cannot go beyond them.

National parties hence always avoid regional satraps but in some states, their hands are tied for they cannot go beyond the regional satraps. While the logic that these satraps were the only face of the party in the previous decades, times have changed. india has majority youth population and youth want to see change in politics. They are tired of seeing the same politicians changing parties and continuing to expand their business empires. For businessmen, they join ruling party always to ensure continuity of their businesses or strike deal with winners to allow their businesses to continue. Ultimately, the National Parties for decades do not understand why the party does not grow in the state.

The National Party leadership or core committee has old political/business ties with these senior leaders for the senior party workers offer loyalty without questioning which the younger generation are not able to provide. Younger generation are ambitious, want to really serve the people and want to take risks for the same. Some of them are genuinely working for people while most political scions just enter politics to keep the power in their family forever. Many of such leaders are the topmost leaders in their caste or important people in the previous decades.

These days, the parties are taking advise of political strategists and keeping some such people aside. A Strong central leader can achieve this while a weak central leader cannot command a regional satrap to step aside.Cadre get dejected when for decades, they are forced to remain muted and not allow party growth. Some of these leaders do not hesitate to sacrifice their party interests for caste&business affiliations. In many states, this is continuing for decades. Yet, the National Parties refuse to go beyond these satraps proving that capitalists ties are deeper than service to nation. In many countries, many of these leaders owe huge amounts to banks. Their debts are written off or settles with as low as 7-10% of outstanding amount since surprisingly, these politicians declare bankruptcy as soon as they lose power. The regional satraps protecting them do not allow the banks to attempt recovery from these e

Supreme Court of India once commented that it has become habit of some to float dummy companies, get contract from govt, take that contract to PSU bank, shift most funds abroad and then declare bankruptcy in perfect pattern. The HIGHEST court in the land might have observed several such cases of capitalist politicains before making that statement. It is also true that most NPAs of large firms have low recovery rates. Why is it so hard for politicians to go beyond their caste and business affiliations and return the money to the country from where they have taken. There is ample evidence in RBI data that this happens more in states where there are strong regional satraps who protect these NPA absconders.

The eternal obligations of political parties to these satraps is the bane of their fall. By choosing a few individuals over party, such national parties write their own obituary eventually. India said no to Monarchy but never adopted Democracy in the party. Inner Democracy in the party is totally absent and decisions are taken by just a few people influenced by the coterie around them. All policies of the government have the private benefit of these coterie and their capitalist friends. Globally, this has become the case where few companies have been allowed to become so big that they control most sectors of economy, and they are close to the ruler in power. India said no to Maharajas, but the influence of High Net worth Maharajas on Indian politics is high. This is a capitalist global model since these big capitalists are in turn bought over by few foreign companies which control nearly all large conglomerates. Just 3 companies own majority of fortune 1000 companies. Similarly, these capitalist maharajas and regional satraps together control leaders whose image is built as a powerful leader.

The world has seen many such Messiahs in the past 500 years. They are marketed by capitalist powers as great leaders but the fact remains that they remain just titular heads controlled by these capitalist forces. Such capitalist forces prefer to grow loyal regional satraps rather than genuine leaders who want to serve nation. In the entire ecosystem from Academia to Culture to Entertainment to Sports Industry, just a few classes dominate in every country and these regional satraps feign in public to be opposing each other while they both report to the same global masters. Hence, those parties who have such entrenched ecosystem even if down for sometime find it easy to bounce back fast.
