Thursday early morning, engineering officials at the Dr KL Rao Irrigation project popularly known as pulichintala project tried to lift the gates of crest gate No.16 to allow incoming water to flow downstream. The bolt of the crest gate broke and the gate got swept away due to the force of the water.
It is a situation where government has to wait for the flood water to recede before it can take up repairs. The downstream areas between Pulichintala and Prakasam barrage are witnessing huge inflows. Heavy rains upstream have already kept inflows in Prakasam Barrage at highs.
The downstream area being flush with water has attracted people to the ghats. This image captured in the early morning hours shows the gates open and water flowing into the sea. Residents are rushing to the ghats to see the incoming water. Water has also been allowed into the canals that line up the city.
Officials have already issued the first warning level at the prakasam barrage. Govt had incidentally also started construction at the retaining wall at Krishna Lanka to protect the low lying areas from future floods. The current outflow at the barrage is in the range of 4 lakh cusecs.
